Michael De Feo
American artist Michael De Feo calls himself ‘quintessential New York,’ famously posting a certain silkscreened flower image in public spaces around the world, often earning him a title of the Flower Man. In addition to his “planting” of flowers, De Feo has also been known to stick images of various underwater scenes, neo-expressionist self-portraits, cherry sticks, and various squares of colorful designs in cities like Amsterdam, Paris, and Buenos Aires. His main objective in tagging is simply to liven up an individual’s walk to school or work in a way that would not have occurred otherwise, to allow a momentary “sense of wonder and excitement about life,” or in cities like New Orleans to provide a magical opportunity to smile or laugh. In other cases his work contains more of an agenda, as in his replacing of human heads with televisions (on crosswalk signs, etc.) as a commentary on television’s absurd role in the lives of U.S. society, something he encourages others to do so as well.
